Ohhh, you Maine-ards (Maine-ites?  Maine-arians?) are all such defeatists.

I think the "outsiders" *had* made up their minds until we "insiders"
pulled the jury back out.  I really believe that we Who fans poured water
on the fire storm of the press run mad, and got folk to look at the real
story.  Now, the jury is still out and waiting to see what happens next.
People are in a "wait and see" mode.
The "outsiders" definitely know it's not an open and shut case.
They're patiently waiting.
End of the month Pete again talks with the coppers.

Now, if the police end up charging Pete, then we got problems.
Everyone will assume the cops found damning evidence on the computers, and
won't have the patience to follow this through a long and drawn out trial.

But at this point, Pete's reputation and level of respect in the world is
buying him time and the benefit of doubt.
