Last night Townshend's brother Paul backed up his
story of being abused as a child - when he was sent to
live with a relation in Broadstairs, Kent, for 18
months at the age of five - and said he was too. "I'm
aware that he is against child pornography," he said.
But Townshend's mother, Betty, 79, said she was
unaware her son had suffered abuse.

"That I don't know anything about," she said. "If what
he says is true, he has carried it privately, even
away from his mother and father."
