legislation in the UK

It looks like MPs are now updating laws in the UK about sex offenses, but no 
one has mentioned the process that has caused Pete so many problems: police 
leak, tabloid hounding, story balloons out of proportion and ruins the 
reputation of the victim.  Does anybody have an opinion on how the UK laws 
might be changed to prevent this happening?  Equal time in the press 
provision?  Stronger stalking and libel laws?  Is there a stalking law in 
the UK that would apply?

This same problem occurs in the US and there have been some landmark cases 
where celebrities have won suits against tabloids (or even better media) for 
both stalking and libel/slander.  There are also cases where the laws have 
been revised accordingly.  Would it work in the UK?
