WHO'S BOUGHT JOHN'S LOCH SCENE?
10:30 - 16 April 2003

An Oil painting which once hung in rock legend John
Entwistle's Gloucestershire mansion has been sold.

The painting, entitled The Banks of the Luss, went for
#19,000 at a Sotheby's Auction at Hopetoun House, near
Edinburgh. The Scottish loch scene, painted by Alfred
De Breanski, was expected to fetch between #15,000 and
#20,000.

It was one of the most prized possessions of the bass
guitarist with rock band The Who.

The painting was expected to fetch a good price
because it was in good condition. In addition, De
Breanski was of the best 19th century Highland
painters.

Harry Dalmeny, director of house sales for Sotheby's,
said the work attracted considerable interest.

He said: "It's a piece Mr Entwistle had in his home in
Stow-on-the-Wold for a number of years. It's something
we came across when we went to the house.

"It has been sold to a UK dealer but I'm afraid I
can't reveal the name."

He confirmed that Lisa Pritchett-Johnson, partner of
the rock icon, was not at the sale.

Mr Entwistle lived in a 53-room mansion in
Stow-on-the-Wold with Ms Pritchett-Johnson, who was a
beneficiary of his will, along with his mother Queenie
and son Christopher.

Mr Entwistle died in a Las Vegas hotel room last June,
aged 57, before The Who were due to play a reunion
tour.

Many of his other possessions go under the hammer in
London next month. Sotheby's will sell some guitars on
May 1.

Around 350 items are being sold in Olympia, West
London, on May 13, including guitars, stage costumes,
photographs, awards, drawings and rare posters. They
are expected to raise #500,000.
