* The Who: Who's Next (1971, MCA/Chronicle, 2 CDs,
2:34:25). One of rock's all-time greatest albums is
presented remastered from an original master, expanded
with six (two previously unreleased) studio recordings
from the time and with a bonus April 26, 1971, live
concert at the Young Vic Theatre in South London (only
two of the 14 tracks previously released). Previous
reissues were derived from secondary masters or, as
with the 1995 reissue, new remixes. If you don't know
The Who's "Baba O'Riley" (one of the first uses of
programmed synthesizers on record in rock), "Going
Mobile," "Bargain," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Behind
Blue Eyes," "The Song Is Over" and "My Wife," you need
to rush out and buy this. Several of the songs were
originally intended for guitarist Pete Townshend's
abandoned "Lifehouse" project, which both he and John
Atkins address in essays in the 28-page booklet. The
disc one bonus tracks include an alternate version of
"Won't Get Fooled Again" (with a different synthesizer
line and no Roger Daltrey yell); and 8:20-long cover
of Marvin Gaye's "Baby Don't You Do It," with Leslie
West of Mountain on lead guitar; the original versions
of "Pure and Easy" and "Behind Blue Eyes" (with Al
Kooper on organ); and an alternate version of "Getting
in Tune." The 75-minute live disc, recorded before a
small, invited audience, includes a cover of Jr.
Walker & The All Stars' "(I'm a) Road Runner" (by Bo
Diddley) and several songs - "Time Is Passing," "Naked
Eye," "Too Much of Anything" and "Water" - that would
take three more years before they appeared on vinyl
(1974's "Odds and Sods" album). Another treat is
Townshend's guitar midway through "Pure and Easy" and
the cover of "Young Man Blues." The Who's rhythm
section have both passed now, but it is great to hear
drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle at their
peak. A+
