Re: What makes a true Who fan? Long

From: SicilianMother@aol.com

Question: What is the true measure of how devoted a fan is of the Who?

Why, it's how they compare to ~AnEnglishBoy~, of course! ;-)

OK, maybe how they compare to Irish Jack!!

How many shows they've been too?

17 shows, 12 with Keith Moon, 15 with John Entwistle, spread
out from 1967 to present, over 10 different tours.

How many shirts from that many shows?

Only two (2). From the original "Quadrophenia USA Tour 1973"
actually titled "Fallout Shelter Tour," and the 1980 tour.
(I'm not much for rock tees)

How old the shirts are?

29 and 22 years, respectively.

How well preserved the shirts are? Or how warn out the shirts are from
wearing the shirts?

Trashed to the max!

How many autographs the person has and the amount of times the person has
been fortunate enough to come in contact with a member of the Who?

No autographs (not much of an autograph seeker)

Won't repeat my Moonie story again (to the pleasure of many).

Whether that contact was positively receptive by the Who member or did the
contact annoy them? Or did the member blow off the fan?

Positively receptive. Moon asked me to join him at his table.

When a Who fan is mentioned by a member of the Who as being a familiar face
(i.e., going to so many shows, they have helped paid the mortgages of the
members of the Who!) during a show?

I'm not worthy, nor qualified in this category.

How close up the person pays to get close to the stage?

As little as $4.00 in '68, $5.00 in '70, under $10.00 in '76,
and $600.00 in 2000.

How close they get by persistence or force to get the closest to the stage as
possible?

Persistence and bellergence in '68, '70 & '76. ;-)
(festival seating)

Being content no matter where their seats are just to hear the Who songs?

All 17 times.

Whether the person is a musician and can play the most songs from the >Who?

Yes, guitar, first song I worked out myself was "A Quick One,"
spring '67, but the first learned was ICE, 1965.

How many albums the person has? CD's? 8 tracks? Cassettes? DVD's?
Video's? Bootlegs?

Nearly every 45 rpm single uo tp Moonie's death (some UK),
EP's (all UK), UK versions of MG, AQO, LAL, WN, Quadrophenia,
all the USA realeased LP's, ALL the CD's, All Johns LP's
(UK "SYHATW") many vinyl boots, CD boots, many vids/DVDs.

I'll count 'em for a fee, jst minimum wage by the hour.

How much reading the person has done regarding the Who?

37 years worth.

Anyone got the Jeff Stein soft cover photo book from
the mid-70's that scored him the gig to direct TKAA?

I do!!

How much of Who trivia does that fan know?

Enough to not have to search the 'net for my answers.

How many of the Who family members can the fan list?

A few, but since most don't relate to the music, they
are not of particular interest to me. Heather Daltrey used
to be a friend of a friend who skated in the Ice Capades.

How far a fan traveled to just see where a member from the Who lives, and
actually being greeted kindly by the member of the Who? (this one is for you
Sandy!)and then getting their photo taken with Who member?

I'm not worthy.

Does the fan have a Who related website?

A discussion group, yes.

TheWhoMaximumRnB@yahoogroups.com

The percentage of money to the fan's income that the fan has spent on
recorded music, live shows or who memorabilia?

Over 37 years? You tell me!

How many miles a fan has traveled to see a show?

Here I'm a wuss, only 300 miles.

What kind of car that fan drove the most miles to see a Who show?

That's a lot of cars over 37 years.

69' VW Bus probably.

What the weather was like while driving that car the most miles to see a Who
show?

Seen 'em in the rain at the Hollywood Bowl November 1967.

That count? Place was almost empty.

How much drugs and alcohol the person consumes before the show?

Lots of LSD in '69/'70

How little drugs or alcohol the person consumes immediately before seeing a
Who show or how wasted that they were they could barely remember the Who
show? (I have been at both extremes).

9/15/02 in Irvine was my first completely sober Who-> show.

Is a groupie a devoted fan or a whore? (see article about stripper who spent
the last night of John's life with him).

Like my ex-wife used to say, "If a man at work constantly
asks you out on a date, and looks like Danny DeVito, it's
sexual harrassment. If he looks like Mel Gibson, it's flattering!"

Moral to the story? All groupies aren't created wqual.

THE *Perfect* Groupie? Penny Lane, of course!!

How many fights, either fist to fist, face to face with no blood shed or
keyboard to keyboard that the fan has been in defending or debating the Who?

I've lost friends over it. Can't lose what you never had!!

I've never hit anyone or been hit, but I've yet to meet
our pal *mc*! ;-)))

I've still got theWho-> though!

BTW........

....I can count the friends I have REALLY got on one hand.

How many Who Fans, that you barely know at first, but have traveled long
distances, you have invited to your home to gather, break bread, fellowship
in honor of and share the appreciate for the Who?

I don't let "those" people into my house, you never know which
one might be *mc*!! ;-)))

How much they cried when a member of the Who has died? How long the >fan took in dealing with the loss?

In the case of Moonie, whom I had met and partied with, shared
drinks and stories with, I cried for days, still do when I watch
IOW, TKAA, 30YMRnB, and am not over it yet.

John? I'm still in shock.

Or, is the measure of the fan made by how deeply, emotionally, culturally or
even politically moved the fan has experienced or impacted because of the
music of The Who?

I'll take the 5th Ammendment.

At what point does a fan turn into fanatic/stalker because of their
obsession?

About the time they get this far into your questions.

All I know, is that when I hear the music, which I know probably 95% word for
word, my brain is comforted and my brain waves are soothed and comforted,
every time. The music is MY music (but I am happy to share with other fans!)
The Who has been the soundtrack to my life. Due to personal manners that are
very intense, I have not been to as many shows as a fan of my depth deserves
to be at. Do any of you hear from friends or family "I heard a song from The
Who and I thought of you"?

All of them. When I got home I had 22 dif messages about
John's death on my ans. mach. And that was only 2 hurs
after it was announced.

I am sure there are many other criteria that I have not listed or thought of,
but would love to get input on.

Probably so.

Even with the differences of opinion that are on this list daily, I feel like
I have a growing and strong bond........that bond I believe comes from the
appreciation of the genius songwriting and guitar playing of Pete, the vocal
interpretation of his music by Roger, and the respect that we feel towards
the Zak's and Simon's and Rabbit's that contribute to the, and in my opinion,
the relevant evolution and yes, the inevitable aging of the Who. What if we
all got older listening to their music and they stayed the same age
performing the music the same as always? That is the magic of what makes
each Who tour performance relevant. Thank God, they are on
fire......(although some don't agree) because it makes me proud of MY
Who..........I only wish I could tell them that.

If you went to one of the shows this tour, you DID tell them!!

Sorry for the length..........but it has been going through my mind ever
since I discovered this list of passionate, opinionated and for the most
part, good hearted, true blue Who fans.

Never apologise for the depth of your love and involement for,
and with, TheWho->

Thank God for wind, rain, and much summer thunder.....

~AnEnglishBoy~

PS~Thanks Johanna, I enjoyed that!
