My point really didn't focus on a comparison of exact number of shows, it was that from beginning to end, this one was better. The consensus on this list and from people I talked to who weren't necessarily Who fanatics, but casual and objective fans, almost to the person said the 2002 performances were better. In San Francisco (Mtn View), one guy said to his friend, "WOW! What an improvement."

The show reviews on this list almost all said that Pete played at a level superior to 2000. A few even said he played with a vengeance not seen since the 70s Pete Townshend. I didn't mention John being there casually... I mentioned it preceded by the words "of course." This means that it was an obvious advantage to be given to 2000. No elaboration needed, it was a blatant concession.

I think the reason for playing would most certainly have an effect on one's intensity night in and night out. One feeling is one of obligation to play. The same anticipation and excitement couldn't have been there from Pete throughout the tour. This tour was one that Pete WANTED to do and I believe his more upbeat, positive mindset leading up to the tour spoke in his inspired performances. Yes, he said he felt an obligation to continue after John's death due to promoters, road staff, etc, but I have the feeling that he really wanted to go on with the tour regardless of these other factors. He was admitedly looking forward to this tour... not so sure he was in 2000. True, I wasn't there in 2000, so your criticism has merit; however, my main evidence of 2002 being better was NOT what I have heard in bootlegs, but what the majority of people who saw both said and wrote.

Listen to Denver 2000. I love Roger, but his voice was atrocious at this concert. I just listened to it again tonight and he couldn't sing much of anything after ICE with any range. The high notes in Bargain were sick, and so were most of the rest. I saw him struggle mightily in Dallas last month, but it was nowhere near as bad as that 2000 show. Most listers here who saw 2002 shows remarked how much better Roger sounded this time around, including Roger himself.

I am also sorry I didn't see any 2000 shows, but I was lucky enough to see the Who at MSG at CFNY with the Ox. I now am even more glad I went and didn't save my $$. I brag on John all the time when I tell people that whether or not the other Who members were the best at what they did was at least arguable, but that Entwistle was hands down the greatest on bass with no close second. He invented the way bass is played now, and up to his death was still the best in the world at it.
