origin of bands

Here's something that Bruce posted on O&S about the Beach Boys, another
example of singers with a shifting groups of sessions musicians behind them.
It seems the concept of "band" was fairly loose for them, and still is
today for such pop groups as NSync, Britany Spears, etc. Where did we get
the idea that a "band" (and especially The Who) should be two to three
guitars and a drum set? Well, okay, maybe a keyboard if Rabbit won't play
toooo much. ;)

>The Beach Boys rarely "played" on their 60s material.
They did the vocals but that was about it. The "music" for
the most part was played by "The Wrecking Crew" a group
studio session guys (and gal) consisting of Hal Blaine,
Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knechtal, Joe Osborn, Carol Kaye,
Glen Campbell (yes the Rhinestone Cowboy), and countless
others. Campbell replaced Brian Wilson after his breakdown
for about 6 months on the road.
