Pete Townshend guitar hero?

to hear other views on this."

I'm not very rational, I haven't played guitar around the world, and I can't
compare Pete with others with the supercilious tone you've used. But, I can
use big words from time to time ;-) I think you're making a generalization
that may hold *some* water.

Strange that you say Pete's playing has gone downhill in the last 5-10
years, but you cite a 1998 performance as one of the best you've heard. I
think we've seen and heard brilliance from him in the last 10 years, but it
has not been consistent.

I think his playing is quite varied over the last 10 years. We're talking
about the period immediately following the terrible injury that effectively
ended his playing for a while. He had to relearn his technique. He had to
learn how to deal with damage to his ears and to his wrist. I'm not trying
to make excuses for my hero, but he really has had to recreate himself as a
musician. He's jazzier now than he's ever been with The Who. He tries more
techniques on a given night than he used to. Some of them feel good to the
listener, some not so much.

He loses me sometimes, too.
