Wow I'll give you pride of place on this one Brian. You're right and I only
just realized it myself.

Let's say your Osama Bin Laden. You've got the U.S. and most of the rest of
the world against you. Is there a way out?

Well you have one ally in addition to the large number of people around you
who would willingly die for your cause. You have time.

Give it a month and some other big news story will come along (probably
another government official having sex out of wedlock or something else
important) and the WTC attack will drop to story two. Soon we'll have
stories about anniversaries or remembrances by the families and the
dedication of the park honoring the victims by the new mayor and we'll all
go "oh, yeah" as we see another replay of the attack video.

Meanwhile Bush & Co. have two options: build a coalition to condemn O.B.L.
and try to build the intelligence network and diplomatic pressure to get him
or make some kinda flashy military attack to try to satisfy America. It
probably won't work and Bush will end up being blamed for not getting him.
Then the next president comes along and we all write it off as that idiot
Bush's mistake and go on about our business of making money and watching TV
and BAM! IT HAPPENS AGAIN!

I don't want to ever say "Oh no, not again" but that's what I see with all
these people saying "Oh let's nuke 'em! That'll learn 'em!" That's the sure
way to make it happen again. If you want to stop this guy the only thing
that's going to work is the day-to-day grind of protecting ourselves, not
forgetting about this guy and waiting patiently until we have a clear
target.

"Don't fire until you see the white of their eyes." Good words then and now.
