The Beatles haircuts?  The packaging was similar, and maybe it invoked the 
habitual response.  ;)  Just looking at them at the time, one would expect 
some kind of Beatles variation.

Do you think there was a point where the attraction for women dropped off?  
Once The Who started with the violent, auto-destructive art thing, maybe?  
It was such an obvious departure from Beatles cuteness--I think that would 
do it.
