I can hear the difference in cds, myself.  I don't care for the bright, 
hard-edged sound that most of the recent ones have--not just The Who's, but 
Pete, Roger and John solo, as well.  I suspect it's like the quick edits on 
RAH, though--something that's a current standard.  Pete has picked it up, I 
think, with the piercing quality of his recent guitar sound.

An interesting question is whether these things are appropriate for The Who. 
  The quick edits are gauged to make somebody interesting who stands totally 
still.  The the piercing quality is to give an edge to music that otherwise 
doesn't have one.  The Who has both these already, so is the addition 
overkill?
