Who needs The Who? John Entwistle hits the road with two tours

After last year's barnstorming Who tour, you'd think John Entwistle would
take a breather. After all, the man who played bass behind the lyric "it's
only teen-age wasteland" is no teen-ager.

But Entwistle -- famous for his spider jewelry, vulture-shaped bass and dark
humor -- will rattle eardrums on two ambitious tours in the coming months.

First is "2001: A Bass Odyssey" featuring Entwistle's band: guitarist
Godfrey Townsend, keyboardist Chris Clark and drummer Steve Luongo.
Entwistle and company will then join Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren and Heart
singer Ann Wilson for "A Walk Down Abbey Road," a Beatles tribute. (The tour
is scheduled to reach the Center For Performing Arts in Sewell on July 18;
call 856-256-8660.)

All this back-and-forth between stadiums and nightclubs doesn't throw the
seasoned musician.

"I mean, the one disadvantage about playin' clubs is -- you try and actually
sort of turn around, and your fly's come undone," Entwistle says dryly.

"I suppose it's very dangerous to use floor switches, because members of the
audience like to walk up and say, 'Oh, what's this?' and press a button. The
great advantage is you can actually see people's reactions on their faces.
If someone's shoutin' at you in the audience, you can just bend over and
whack 'em."

But the musician is not above the odd spell of jitters.

"I only get the butterflies on the first gig," he tells PAGE X in his deep,
British-accented voice. "I mean, I literally get the dry heaves before I go
on. It's the same on a Who tour, my tour.

"Mainly because -- I'm not frightened about my own ability. I'm frightened
that something's going to go wrong or I'm going to forget the words -- lots
of little things that can happen.

"Once I've played three or four songs, I'm quite happy. The butterflies
disappear."

Entwistle is asked if he and his Who bandmates, Pete Townshend and Roger
Daltrey, buried any hatchets during their 2000 tour.

His reply: "Um, yeah, yeah. We kind of -- we always -- for several years, I
mean, we've kept our distances. I mean, basically, Roger's the only man in
the world who can tell me to turn my bass down. So we have, like, a guarded
sort of respect for each other."

The John Entwistle Band is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the
Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park. $20. (732) 502-0600. (A "soundcheck
party" is scheduled to be held from 5-7 p.m.; admission $15.)

The band is also scheduled to perform at 9 p.m. June 2 at Trump Marina Hotel
and Casino, Huron Avenue and Brigantine Boulevard, Atlantic City. $22.50.
(609) 441-2000.
