Now and then a complete song happens on stage. It doesn't really matter
whether it happens there, or in Pete's studio, or on the plane between gigs,
as long as it's caught on tape. Once it's recorded, it's real. He might
decide to consider it a demo, or rework it later into something else, but if
it's a complete thought and it's recorded, it's a song.
The band did a lot of development on the songs in the early days, and even
now the old songs change and evolve during performance--so they're not
something static. For a notable example, look at how Entwistle's bass solo
on 5:15 has gotten longer and more elaborate. The studio cut is just a
moment frozen in time. It's true that musicians have more resources in the
studio, but again, notice how Starr went to DAT on his last album, and
Sprngsteen skipped the studio process completely. Immediacy is back in
style. It's cheaper, too. ;)
