Re: The Who Mailing List Digest V8 #67

Shrade that was an excellent synopsis of Moon's style.  Mood, and emotion
were the key to his genious. Just as Impressionistic paintings have more feel
than exact renderings Moon painted his drum work in colors. For example on
Thle Live at Leed version o MG: his graceful entrances into Townshends guitar
passages and then the patience in waiting for when to pounce into it. You
must know a little about drumming yourself, especially to note Moon's
signature crash-snare combo lead-in he used to many of his breaks.  I think
it is the unpredictability of Moon which made him so exciting.  Much like a
great speaker who ad libs the most crucial parts of a speech, Moon preferred
going into the key song passages without knowing if he himself could actually
pull it off.

Yea, I have the the Cream box set, too. I really like live stuff on it.
Ginger  Baker's tom tom work certainly matches Moon. Kieth very much admired
Baker and sought him out near the end of his life.

One of the few Who albums I haven't heard much is WBN, but I plan on
purchasing it soon. So, I can't comment on it.  The Who box set is great but
I don't know why they elected to place nearly all of the "Who Sell Out' on
it.  I remember seeing that record  in the "cut-out bin" when albums were
still around.  The music on that record was too light and fluffy for me.
More from Tommy or Quad would have made for a much more satisfying set.

I was fortunate to see the Who in Seattle in the spring of 76. I'll never
forget what Moon's personality added to the Who's show.
