The Who and Our Lady Peace
Hey all,
Anoyone here by chance also a fan of Our Lady Peace or know their work?
I recently posted this message to an Our Lady Peace message board talking
about song meanigns and interretations and I thought it may spark some
discussion here (Assuming there's an Our Lady Peace fan lurking around here)
Our Lady Peace's newest album Spiritual Machines is based upon a book from
Ray Kurzweil The Age of Spirtual Machines: When Computeres Exceed Human
Intelligence. Thier both about the blurring line between humans and
computers. I thought it was similar to the whole You are safe from harm on
the Grid type themes from Lifehouse.
Anyways heres the post:
---------------
Hey all,
First off about interpreting lyrics in whole. I think it was a radio
interview I herd during the Clumsy era where someone called in and asked the
meaning behind such and such song. Raine was somewhat reluctant to talk
about b/c he felt that with alot of the songs it's better to interpret them
yourselves and like relate them to your own lives, instead of someone
telling you this is what the song is about.
About Spirtual Machines in a whole I think the title itslef describes the
tone of the album. You can relate to the songs as both your spirtual
everyday life issues as well as being able to relate the songs to computers
and the blurring line between Humans and Computers (As is said in Kurzeils
book).
So the earlier discussion about Big Green Monkey is both about socitey and
computers. You can't really say for sure this line is only about life and
can't realate at all to computers or vica versa.
I can't think of any other bands currently that have such meaning and wide
variety of interpretation to their songs. However I'm a big fan of the
classic rock band "The Who". Thier best known for thier rock opera's Tommy,
Quadrophenia, and also Lifehouse.
Lifehouse was never really a Who album but it's somewhat of an unfinished
work that still currently being developed today. After lsiteing to
Spiritual Machines I imediatly thought of Lifehouse seeing as how thier both
about the future (and present). Both about the blurring line between humans
and computers.
The underlying theme to Lifehosue was deveoped back in the '60's, '70;s
before the age of computers as we know it. But Pete Townshend talked of The
Grid whihc could easily be realted to the Internet of current day.
Well anyways I'm ranting a bit too much here, but I hope this spurs a bit of
discussion especially if anyone else here is a fan of The Who and knows
thier work.

Kind of some more thinking/ranting here.
I seem to recall Pete Townshend talking about Lifehosue and saying that
music could be composed to fit everyones individual personality or somethign
like that.
So now that I think about that, it takes me back to waht I said about Our
Lady Peace's songs. Everyone can interpret them to thier own lives and
situations. Kinda similiar to your daily horoscope in the newspaper. Their
broad enough that the same horoscope for say scorpio could be interpreted
the same way for an aqaurius or somethign to that efffect.
Just some random thoughts/rants that have been developing in my head lately.
Look forward to any responses.

Brian Wright
