Art house spotlight: 'Quadrophenia'

Despite powering up the soundtracks of "Goodfellas," "Jerry Maguire,"
"Rushmore," "The Limey," and "American Beauty," to name a few recent
examples, the Who have had mixed experiences with the movies. Ken Russell
turned their rock opera "Tommy" into an overblown "Rocky Horror," and Roger
Daltrey's intended career as Cockney matinee idol fizzled on the launch pad.
Then in 1979 everything came together -- in a film nobody saw.
"Quadrophenia" convincingly re-creates the teen zeitgeist of drab early '60s
Britain as the cool, dandified Mods and their tribal rivals, the
leather-and-studs Rockers, struggle to define cool. Our surrogate is Jimmy
Cooper (Phil Daniels), who splits his time between ofice drudgery in an ad
firm and druggy downtime with his Mod pals. During a wild weekend in the
decaying seaside resort of Brighton, Jimmy's life turns inside out. He's
swept up in Mod/Rocker riots, disowned when his parents discover his drug
stash, browbeaten by his bosses and dumped by his girlfriend. Worst of all,
he learns his Mod role model, the Ace (Sting), works as a hotel bellboy,
kowtowing to snotty tourists. The film plugs into a particular generation's
adolescent angst with a universality that makes it as vibrant and relevant
today. (7:20 & 9:40 p.m. today-Thu., plus midnight today-Sat., 5 p.m. Sun.,
