No, it was a joke.

Besides, how do you know? McCartney admitted writing Helter Skelter because
of I Can See For Miles, and we also know John used feedback on I Feel Fine 4
months after The Who (as The High Numbers) opened for The Beatles.

True...but WN was nothing like any of them. As I said. Sticky Fingers was in
fact a retreat to the Stones' old RnR sound.

Gloria:

You hit the nail on the head. No other band, including the vaulted Beatles,
were trying to do more than write entertainment EXCEPT The Who, who were
trying their damnest to take music up a level to a spiritual plane.

Zeppelin in 1968-1970 were as good live as The Who, although while The Who
changed their songs to compensate for no overdubbing Zep's music just sounds
thinner. But their performance is still up there.

Ever hear Green Day's version of My Generation (on Kerplunk)?

The edited 9 minute instrumental is on there, as is the finished with vocals
version AND another one entirely called Teenage Wasteland which appears to
be a later recording...perhaps around the time of the WAY demos?

You're entitled to that belief, but I'm also entitled to challenge it when
you take it too far.

No, that's pretty definite. Check the sales figures on Psycho and the
Greatest Hits. Jagger's new one will sell more, and his solo stuff sucks.

Sroundtable:

That's not what I meant. I meant the sound, using horns and strings instead
of guitars. THAT was a risky move.

bands

TJ:

I think we have to go into any discussion figuring no one here is immature
enough to get so easily offended. I mean, we're all aware of those who think
The Who is shit and we don't get all bent out of shape, right?

> but what about artists like frank zappa, and brian wilson, and bob dylan?

I don't know that Dylan did much innovation in the studio. His lyrics, sure.

Don't forget the Whofest Retirement Home I'll be building in the Smoky
Mountains about 10 years from now.
