We've been discussing this at some length.  The inconsistencies pretty much 
boil down to the search for a new sound, combined with Moon's death that 
forced them to look for a new drummer at the same time.

Likely Pete picked out a drummer he though would work for the new sound, but 
actually I don't think Kenney could play it both ways, old and new, while 
some of the later drummers did a much better job.  Zak does seem to be 
extraordinarily well suited to play with The Who.  We're all very lucky to 
have him around.
