FILMMAKER, 73, LOOKS FOR LOVE ON WEB

Famed movie director Ken Russell is hoping to make a passionate love story starring himself - he's placed a personal ad on the
Internet to find romance.
The ad from the 73-year-old filmmaker, whose blockbusters include "Women in Love," "Tommy" and "Altered States," reads:

"Unbankable film director, Ken Russell, seeks Lady Soul Mate Mad about Movies, Music and Moet & Chandon Champagne."

Russell is making his plea on a Web site run by associate Iain Fisher (www.iainfisher.com/russell1.html).

The thrice-married movie man, who's the father of eight children, says he's received just one "interesting" reply so far. "I am
genuinely looking for someone to share my life with, and I believe the Internet is a great way of connecting with people," said
Russell, who lives in the English countryside.

"I have gotten to know one particular lady very well, but we have yet to meet, so I will see how that develops. At the moment, we
are communicating by e-mail.

"I am very keen to hear from anyone who would like to get in touch."

Those who know Russell paint wildly different portraits of him as a family man.

Friend Melvyn Bragg calls the director "charming, shy and wonderful."

But his most recent ex-wife, Hetty Baynes, from whom he split a few years ago, says the portly, white-haired filmmaker is impossible
to live with.

"Ken had a terribly short fuse. If anything wasn't up to scratch, he would blow up. Anything could spark it off - a baby's toy left
on the floor, the tiniest thing," she said.
