Harmonic guitar

There has been some discussion here lately about Pete incorporating some
'harmonic' licks into his new sound.  Some have compared them to Eddie Van
Halen tricks where he plays single notes very fast and uses a sustain to
make them bleed into one another.

This morning I was listening to Johnny Ramone (one of my faves).  I was
reminded that 'harmonic' has been used to describe his playing style as
well.   In parcicular the fast, sustained chords that blend into each other.

Could someone with a bit more musical experience than I (I have zero)
explain the concept of harmonics?
