Pete's diary

>In the normal sense The Who are not really a 'band' at all, whatever Roger
>feels.

This is an interesting statement. I think he's right that The Who aren't
really a band. They were when they started off, but in forty years they've
matured into something beyond that. Legend, maybe?

Ever since TOMMY hit the stage, they've been something beyond just four guys
in a rock band. You catch glimpses of other things. A primal force? Pure
instinct incarnated? Or maybe a classical composer who somehow got stuck
with three other guys who want to play loud music.

Roger likes that cozy, exclusive feel of a small band, but actually he
handles the big-time stuff better than Pete in some ways. You can't really
accuse Roger of thinking small. ;)

>There have been moments lately when the sense of some kind of stage
>'competition' has crept in. I start a guitar solo and suddenly John and Zak
>are also playing solos. So I defer, and start to chunk along playing
>rhythm, and they think I'm fucked off and go all quiet. so I pick up my
>solo again and so do they. It's like being followed around by a herd of
>manic elephants. I really am reminded of Keith Moon sometimes. It's quite a
>laugh.

This is totally hilarious.

>So when I'm tired like this I obviously feel the need to remind myself why.
> I don't think it's because I'm travelling or jumping up and down (a
>little bit) on stage. I am putting more into all this than I really want
>to. I am out of control. I have no power over the part of me that
>proclaims himself to be Townshend as Picasso proclaimed himself. I don't
>think The Who, the songs, the fans, history or even charity deserve what I
>give. But I give it any way. Can't help myself.

This must be the demons that reviewer saw, smoking from his fingertips.

>Watch me in the coming months. Watch me in the coming year. I plan to be
>very, very pretentious indeed.

Go Pete!
