RE: National Review (more thoughts)

>>They offered a lesson that every rock musician today should heed: If
you can't play it, you're doomed

Notice it's the quality of the music/performance that ultimately seems
to determine the reputation of the artist. People do seem to sneer at
bands that are mostly stage show as they get older--or actually even at
younger artists that are mostly show and no substance.

The Who had a highly visible show to get started--the instrument
demolition. If they'd never progressed beyond their technical and
song-writing skills at that time, people would be laughing now, but
instead, recall that the stage show scaled down through the seventies.
The costumes became simpler and the demolition less frequent, and
somehow folks hardly noticed.

So now this is a fairly minimal tour--small stage, simple backdrop,
five guys playing music for a couple of hours. They've pretty much
shown they could do it the old seventies/eighties way: Pete doing his
split jumps and Roger running in place as he sings, but as the tour
progresses, they've gotten tired of doing that--cut back some on the
athletics. What's important is still there: the music, the expression
and the quality of the performance.

Has anybody heard any sneers?
