Re: Pete slang mystery solved

Here's a bit more from Partridge's Slang Dictionary: A term of contempt
for a person; a 'dog's body'. Source: from windings of cotton-wool about
the ball of the foot and the toes which, to displace socks, prevent
blistering implying that the person is a tramp or provincial. Started
around 1905, but enjoyed a revival in Britain in the mid-1970's, perhaps
influenced by some TV show.
