Musicmaker.com To Offer Townshend Album For Free
Musicmaker.com and Platinum Entertainment are expected to announce today that
the double-CD set "Pete Townshend Live: A Benefit For Maryville Academy," will
be available for free download on Musicmaker’s site starting Monday, according
to Musicmaker VP of sales and marketing Bill Crowley.
Individual tracks and the entire Platinum album—which will be released to retail
the following day—will be available for free in the secure MP3, Liquid Audio,
and Microsoft Windows Media Audio formats until Sept. 27. After the one-week
window, the album will be sold as separate tracks or in its entirety.
During the promotional period, the label will select a radio single based on
which track gets the most downloads.
In related news, Musicmaker has signed a non-exclusive deal with Musicland
Stores Corp. to make the latter’s library of 200,000 songs available for
custom-CD compilations on Musicland’s Web sites—SamGoody.com, Suncoast.com,
MediaPlay.com, and OnCue.com. The tracks will be accessible later this week.
In addition, more than 75,000 songs will be available as downloads for use by
Musicland in online promotions scheduled for the fourth quarter.
Musicmaker has a similar deal with Trans World and is pursuing deals with other
major online retailers.
