Throat cancer, reportedly from smoking.  He didn't announce it until it 
looked like he was going to be okay.

BTW, Pete's statement that his tinnitus is cured may be a little hasty.  
Reports were that he was wincing some at Friday night's show, and after fans 
whistled too loudly, he inserted an earplug into one ear.  The next day in a 
radio interview, he requested that no one whistle during the show.
