Re: TED, Let's do the Time Warp, Conceptual love, Vocalizations, Whofest 1999?

>> Emerson Lake and Palmer isn't exactly a prominent new group
>
>Yes, but we are talking about 1978. You aren't stuck in a time warp,
are you? They certainly were a prominent band in the 70's.

More like 1973. Definitely fading by '78.

>I'm hearing electronic music as opposed to guitar music. Now tell me
which Techno came from. Or Depeche Mode's style, for that matter.

You think ELP and Depeche Mode sound similar? Wow.

In any case, I didn't say The Who was solely responsible for the techno
movement, only that WAY was tending in that direction and might have had
an influence. Pink Floyd would be on my list, too, and Walter/Wendy
Carlos (bigtime).

>So some of the songs having a similar theme makes it a "concept album?"
In that case, there are thousands and thousands. Imagine, for instance,
how many are "love" concept albums! Every Sinatra...how about the
Partridge Family?

What makes a concept album then, if not a unifying theme?

>> <grin> Watch out. Did you hear he wrote a song for a movie
soundtrack just recently?

>Yeah? And? Am I blown away by his amazing writing skills? Is he in PT's
league?

How many people are? But then, you don't much like what PT's been
putting out either, do you. Guess you'll just have to go without
fulfillment.

>Case closed.

It's different, true, but it's actually better in some ways. Actually
RD never did have much of a voice.

>Do you really want to see his voice go completely and Rog embarrass
himself as Robert Plant frequently does? I for one do not!

I sort of expect Roger to do what he's always done--that is, the best
with what he's got.

>> There are some people, you know, who think PT will never do anything
better than "My Generation." Does that mean he should have continuted
doing MG for the rest of his life?
>
>No. But my question is why did you lump me amongst this sort of
thinking, with no evidence whatsoever to back you?

You said PT peaked at Quad, didn't you? And that nothing was as good
since? So I was only pointing out that some people felt the same about
"My Generation," written some years before.

Personally I rather like most things the man has done. I've been
especially pleased with "Psychoderelict." What I wouldn't like to hear
is for him to try to reproduce the 1973 (or the 1965, for that matter)
Who sound on everything he does.

>Really? I have yet to meet that serious musician. Praise for WN is
rather universal, whereas WAY was never considered to even be that good.

By whom? Rock music fans?

>Not really. One has almost perfect Rock music, almost the epitome of
Rock excellence and progression...while the other is Rock music with
both good and poor moments, a certainly lessor performance, no
progression whatsoever but instead heavy "borrowing" from Jazz...not to
mention an uneven delivery by all involved. Rotten oranges, perhaps...

If one was a jazz fan, mightn't it be considered a positive progression?

>> Uh, I think they've been working on it a while.

>Oh? You know something about the tour?

No, but the negotiations for the BBC "Lifehouse" didn't spring into
existence the instant you said the magic words.
