Pete has tinnitis.  This is both a loss of hearing (high frequency
range) and that loud sounds in that same frequency range can cause
pain.  The more you are exposed to loud sounds in that frequency
range, the more damage is done.  Initially it has to be very loud, but
once the damage is done by the very loud noises, additional damage
comes at lower volumes.
