I'm with you on this one, keets.  And even if Pete had managed to 
follow the punk trend, I think most of the young punk fans would have 
spotted this for what it was -- mutton dressed as lamb!  You can 
point to all the ways the Who influenced, or possibly even invented, 
punk, but I suspect the kids would have seen it as a bunch of old 
geezers trying to rip off their new style of music.  I can think of 
few better ways for the Who to completely blow their credibility with 
the younger generation.  Pete knew this.  As much as he loved punk, 
he knew that (at the ripe old age of 33!) he was too old for it.  
Instead of aping punk for WAY, he decided to try something new 
instead.  Was he successful?  Well, that's for each of us to decide 
on our own.  But I think we should all be able to agree that Pete's 
willingness to try new things is one of the things that separated the 
Who from so many other dull rock bands.  Isn't that why we love them?
