I haven't been following this thread closely but are we talking about the guitar
given to him by his grandmother that he smashed? If so Pete has answered as he
is source of this story.

In a interview with NPR in late '93 he related the story of his first guitar and
how it died. From memory (I taped the interview but it is "somewhere" in the old
tape archive): He wanted a guitar but his dad wouldn't get him one but had his
grandmother get one for him. Not knowing much about guitars she bought "one of those
cheap spanish guitars you hang on the walls of Mexican restaurants". The guitar was
barely playable as "the strings were about 5 inches off the fretboard". While
living with his grandmother Pete and John were playing and Grandma didn't like the
racket they were causing and told them to stop. They didn't and tempers flared.
Pete then smashed the guitar as John looked on in shock. Pete related they were
about 13 or 14 years old at the time.

I hadn't heard this story before. Pete said it had come out in one of his
"sessions" with his shrink or something. As with everything Pete says it might be true
then again it might not. :) At least it is a good story. How an amp got into this
is beyond me. By the time Pete had an amp he had to have been older and back living with
his folks. I really doubt Pete would smash an amp, they were very valuable in the formative
years of bands of the time. The ONLY reason Bill Wyman was asked to join the Stones was
because he had amps the band needed.
