To contribute to the "Sartwell's Law" controversy:  I think I know 
where he is coming from, which is why when I saw an Algerian rock group 
last summer which somehow sounded too cheerful/too French, and thinking 
about it, I realized that most of the Americans in the crowd didn't 
seem too moved by them because the group didn't have that thing, the 
sort of sad thing, you can call it a blues or a hillbilly roots thing, 
which makes American music special, whether it is black or white.
