MacHeath, McVicar ... McDaltrey!

The Godfather noted that "City TV is showing Mack The Knife tonight.
Everyone should check this out.
Roger is good as always, and he does a ripping version of the title track."

He's right. I can't stand musicals--yet I've watched this time and time
again (show it to my classes. Don't ask.). What's interesting is that Roger
plays the narrator in this adaptation of Kurt Weill's (composer of the
Alabama Song made famous by Jim Morrison) Threepenny Opera--itself a 20th
cent. adaptation of John Gay's 18th century "Beggar's Opera." In this
version, Raul Julia plays MacHeath (i.e., Mack the Knife.") However, there's
a faithful 18th cent-style version of "The Beggars Opera" itself out
there--shown sometimes on PBS--in which Roger--heavily made up-- plays
MacHeath! Can't vouch for the quality of that one, but Mack the Knife is
essential viewing for any Daltrey fans--and maybe even more so for
Roger-knockers. The man's talents transcend rock and roll. No, not
"transcend"--extend beyond. That's better.
By the way, anybody gonna be standing in line at the BO next week for Camden
tix?
