No.  A Sousaphone is a large tuba-like instrument that wraps around 
the player's body.  I am not exactly sure what John was playing, but 
it is a very close relative to a Flugelhorn.  The flugelhorns that I 
have played on have not been as large as the one John played, but it 
did give a similar sound.
