Drinamyl, better known as Purple Hearts were a pale, powder-blue, uncoated,
scored tablet in the shape of an irregular ellipse, wider at one end of the
score mark than at the other, thus looking shield-shaped (which is where the
idea of a "purple heart" came in).

Drinamyl contained 5mg dexamphetamine sulphate and 32mg amylobarbitone (a
downer), which gave a smoother ride, better traction and also acted as an
accelerant. The two drugs had quite a different half-life (the barbiturate
lasting probably 12-14 hours and the amphetamine 4-6 hours) and the
barbiturate eased the rough edges when the dexedrine component wore off.
Licensed for use in cases of mild temporary neurosis the recommended dose was
one tablet twice or thrice daily ; Mods typically consumed anywhere up to one
hundred or more in the course of a long weekend.
