I remember Pete being interviewed about this album title. His explanation was that no matter how much people build someone up to be a hero, they'll always have a level of distrust. For example, he said, even an all american cowboy would be accused of having "funny" eyes, i.e. he's not really one of us. It was 15 years ago, but I'm pretty sure that's what he said.
