Re: John Entwistle
I've only just got ThunderFinger's Anthology CD. Wow, what a
disappointment! There's hardly a good song or performance on it. Songs
with banal lyrics, forgettable melodies, productions so overblown they'd
make Phil Spector blush, John singing way out of his range (he always does
- - too high mostly, sometimes too low), no feeling at all in the vocals and
a couple of Jim Steinmanesque attempts at humor that fail dismally. Worst
of the worst is that the bass-playing is utterly prosaic! While he is
certainly the god of the four-string John is obviously a one-trick pony who
only shines within the Who context. I saw him out here in Australia a
couple of years ago playing with a pick-up band for the National Music Fair
in Sydney and while it's great to see your hero in the flesh there's no way
that he cut loose like he does with The Who.
