Who Firsts

The first Who I heard was I Can See For Miles on the radio, although I
didn't identify it in my mind at the time as The Who (I remembered it when I
heard it again later) in that summer of great music, 1967.
Then, exiled to a private school in the beautiful mountains of North
Carolina in the Fall of `69, I had a hallmate named Tommy. From his room I
constantly heard, over and over: "Tommy, can you hear me?" Understandably
curious, I ventured over to see exactly what the deal indeed was.
The cover of TOMMY hooked me. Very impressive. He played the album,
explaining somewhat inexpertly. Very nice. My first favorite was Amazing
Journey (still is).
I escaped from said school by Xmas, by guile and and my wits (playing on
parental paranoia) alone, and was thus Who-less for a time. Pinball Wizard,
I'm Free, and See Me Feel Me were making a big splash on the radio, of
course. When LIVE AT LEEDS was released, I bought it on 8-Track...and The
Who became my favorite band. TOMMY followed, then SELL OUT...so when WHO'S
NEXT was released, I was THE certified Who fan of our group. Of course, I
was also THE certified Rock fan as well, being a lot more into it than
anyone in our school/group/etc. I think these things go hand in hand. The
Who are my favorite band because they are the best Rock band, and not the
best Rock band because they're my favorite...and so on.
