July In Whostory

I'm sending this out a few days early since I'm off for vacation:

     1 Year Ago this month
John begins touring the U.S. as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr
Band starting in St. Louis on the 2nd.

Top album U.S. "For Unlwaful Carnal Knowledge" - Van Halen; Britain
     "Love Hurts" - Cher
On the 15th PACE Theatrical Group approaches Des McAnuff about
creating a stage musical out of "Tommy."
The Who record their last track to date, "Saturday Night's Alright
For Fighting," at Eel Pie and Revolution Studios.

Top album U.S. "Tapestry" - Carole King; Britain "Bridge Over Troubled
     Water" - Simon & Garfunkel
A 3:37 edit of "Won't Get Fooled Again" hits the U.S. charts on the
     10th. It reaches #15.
The Who mime to the short version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" on
BBC1's "Top Of The Pops" on the 15th.
Moon buys Tara House, a bizarre multi pyramid-shaped house. He
lives there with his mother, wife, daughter and many hangers-on and
     when he's in town, it's a 24-hour-a-day party.

Top single U.S. "Hanky Panky" - Tommy James and The Shondells; Britain
     "Sunny Afternoon" - The Kinks
"The Kids Are Alright" single is released in the U.S. It fails to
hit the Billboard charts, but reaches #85 in Cash Box.
The Who perform at the 6th annual National Jazz and Blues Festival
on the 30th. The Move also perform, doing their rip-off of The Who's
stage act (they smash TV sets). The Yardbirds were also scheduled to
play, but canceled at the last minute. Facing a disappointed crowd of
Yardbirds fans watching them during a howling rainstorm, The Who give
one of their best performances, ending with a great smashup which
     delights the crowd.
