Pete and Asia

Jim Jackson enlightened me about Pete's dislike for Asia back in 1982.

I'm very sorry to hear that, as I was the sole list member who gave Asia my nod as next most favorite band to The Who. I've always liked Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc. and it seemed only natural that a blending of two of those groups would also be enjoyable to me. I'm hoping that Pete meant that he wasn't very fond of "supergroups". Asia's early albums sold pretty well and I think most would have to say that they were successful. I happen to believe their success was because of their product rather than their previous history. Since Pete didn't like Asia, does anyone know Pete's opinions of Yes and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer? Pete's opinion could sway me if I was waffling in my interest of a particular group, but when I like something a lot, I don't care what others think.

P.S. Jim - If you ever come across that interview again, I'd love to see it.

>Gang,

>I was reading a Pete interview from 1982 in RECORD (a subsidiary magazine >of ROLLING STONE, no longer in print I believe). In it, Pete lambastes >Asia (remember them? Wetton, Howe, Palmer, and Downes; "Heat of the >Moment," big smash debut album, etc.) for being "prefabricated" and still >#1. Now, I happen to like Asia (as long as Wetton's is the lead vocal) >then and now.

>I was wondering--any of you guys out there love bands that you know for a
>fact that Pete or other Who members dislike? A reason I ask this is >because when Pete dissed Asia in 82, I swore off them for a couple of years >(hey, Pete was big in my life back then; now, I don't give a shit what he >likes--I like what I like). Any similar tales out there in Who land?
