After I got back from vacation last Monday, I got a copy of the Reuters
new feed of the concert. Sorry in advance I can't get you copies, but
to say they frown on doing that here would be mild.
Here's what it shows: the rush to the stage; interviews with fans (one
guy wearing a Dylan cap speaking Spanish standing next to a guy wearing
a "Keith Moon" - type bullseye T-shirt; a Swedish Morisette fan; and a
middle-aged couple who had come down from Leeds at 5am). Quick shots of
the opening Prince Trust band, Morisette and Dylan; and then the
following interviews:
Roger (wearing sunglasses which he takes off a one point to reveal a
horribly torn up eye): "A little bit of a run-in with a microphone stand
being swung by
Mr. Gary Glitter. My fault entirely, because I was standing behind
him; he didn't know I was there. He swung it around his head and the
foot of the stand, which luckily had a lump of rubber on it, smashed
the bone that holds the eye in place. I'm all right, I'll be all
right. But if it hadn't had the rubber on it, I would have been dead
because it would have gone through the eye. What a great rock 'n'
roll ending! (laughs). Killed by one of your idols!"
Gary Glitter: "I've already been getting into the role a little bit too
much.
You may have seen some of the press."
Stephen Fry: "Was it in the papers today?"
GG: "A lot of press today. I'm just going to work out with Roger
because he's now wearing a patch, you know. We had an accident
on-stage and these things happen."
Fry: "He was assaulted by Sir Garfield Glitter here who just threw
a mike stand at his face! Extraordinary!"
Pete Townshend: "You get anxious sometimes, I mean I'm anxious about
Roger. I
feel so sorry for him, so fearful for him because he's got to go up
there and he's really got to sing and he's going to put his skull
under tremendous pressure and it could start a tremendous pain and it
could start to bleed. I'm really worried."
The Prince arrives in his limo. The quick shots of The Who
performing "Love, Reign O'er Me;" a dour Pete, Zac bashing the skins;
John; Roger in his eyepatch. Then shots of the crowd while Clapton
plays. No shots of Clapton!
Then the reception line with the Prince shaking Dylan's hand. A
closeup of Roger talking to the Prince. I can't make out what either
says, but at one point the Prince motions to his eye, as if asking
what the hell Roger's wearing the patch for. Then they all sit on
benches for a photo-op. And that's it.
Hope you enjoy
Brian
