I wouldn't call PT's lead playing sluggish, but in 1970, everyone was
sluggish compared to Hendrix. I think Townshend used heavy strings because
they had punch, besides - light strings break a lot. It's slow going playing
leads with heavy strings, although SRV did a fine job of it. I don't think
Pete had very much confidence in his lead playing, but what I hear I like.
He was a raw power player, not a tapper like guitar technicians such as
Satriani, Malmsteen, Van Halen, etc. Keith Moon was raw power; Carl Palmer a
tapper. Entwhistle: Power; Stanley Clarke: tapper. Clarke is a good bass
player, but there ain't no thunder in HIS fingers.
