Who vs Led Zep Or... What Kinda People Are They?

hMMM... I think I like talking about cars almost as much as I do talking
about The Who...

Now let's put some relevant facts together...

Sales:

Volkswagen sells a LOT more cars than Mercedes-Benz. I can assure you that MB
is a much better car than VW...

Influences:

Karl Benz invented the "patent motorcar" in 1885. Gottleib Daimler made the
next "car" in 1886. In 1901, Daimler sold his entire production to Emil
Jenick (sp?) for the agreement of renaming the car line after his daughter,
Mercedes. In 1926, Daimler & Benz merged... Which cars came after these two
clever Germans, and how were they influenced? AND, where does Stanley (yes,
the "Steamer" guy) fit in???

Now, in the early 60's, for some silly reason, Mercedes-Benz looked to THESE
(USA) shores for "influences" and put ugly "fins" on their cars in the vain
of the Cadillac. In the 70's, as Mercedes-Benz popularity grew, GM tried
desperately to copy them. The best they could do (at the time) was the
attractive, yet disfunctional, Seville (based on the Nova), to be followed by
the Cimmaron. I think today's Seville is as close as they'll come to a
Mercedes, but the "influence" is obvious...

Remember all the ever-so-silly cars with the Mercedes-sytle grills? From the
K-Car to various piece-of-<Picard> Chevys. Influence yes, quality no...

I won't even begin to bore you with independent rear suspensions, crumple
zones, fuel injection or anything like the other things Mercedes has first
and how they influenced other manufacturors...

Point??? (You mean there's supposed to be a point to this?)

I'm trying to figure out the "point" of the whole "quality vs quanitity" and
Who influenced Who thread...

Let's just say that The Who did their thing first (and I'm not sure that's
entirely true) and others were influenced by them (definately true) AND, they
in turn, were influenced by others. After all, is it an embarrasing or even
bad thing to say, "I used someone else's good idea"??? And, of course there's
the competitive factor. "I can do that better than them!"

So... there you have it. Or, perhaps you don't?
