Quad (I think) memory

In "The Punk Meets the Godfather", everyone knows the "Talking 'bout
my generation" that's barely understandable. Does anyone know how that was
done, and who did it on stage?
I have this very distant memory that recently I would swear is Who
footage on TV. The song sounds like "Punk/Godfather", and it seems to be
Pete singing that part. The thing is that there is a tube-like attachment
on the microphone; whether it is a part of it or not, I don't know. Could
it be Who, and could that be maybe a special attachment to get that distant,
throaty sound?
All this Who stuff today! (Must be Keith's spirit....)
