That's funny---reminds me of "The Catcher in the Rye." What you just said was
in fact the theme of the book---Holden Caulfield had to grow up, and instead
of rubbing out all the "Fuck you's" in the world to accept them, and let it
go. Funny that it's banned for having the Eff-Word in it. J.D. Salinger is
not amused though. Perhaps he should have written "<Riker> you" instead?
And along those lines . . . have you ever read "1984" by George Orwell? In
fact by limiting language (the purpose of Newspeak) Big Brother was trying to
limit the Party's attitudes as well, eliminating "thoughtcrime." How can you
*think* about something if there are no words to express that thought? Can
you think of rebellion if you don't know what a rebellion is? That is the
reasoning behind censorship, I believe. For example, if a young woman is
assaulted and then blamed for it because she is wearing skimpy clothes, does
that not indicate that the mere sight of her put nasty thoughts into the
assaulter's head? And then what about people who trash nice mailboxes? That
happens a lot on our block. Does the sight of an attractive and expensive
mailbox trigger thoughts of destruction in some people? Are human beings
really so thoughtless and stupid?? Censorship would only work on morons who
must blame everyone and everything else for their own thoughtless actions.
I'm sorry this has nothing to do with the Who, and I've been rambling on now,
but I feel strongly about the topic and had to get my -2 cents in.
