Ah, interesting point, and something else I've always been curious about.
The earliest performance I've ever seen with the full-on Pete aerial show is
the Rolling Stones R&R Circus footage, which (if i'm not mistaken) was filmed
around the time the Who were recording Tommy. That seems to be kind of a
pivotal, transitional performance, from what I can tell; you see first real
signs of where the Who will be for the next few years: Pete with SG, jumping
around, Roger with long, curly hair and fringes. It almost seems like kind of
a prototype for the Who's Tommy-era stage show.
I've always wondered, only half jokingly, if Pete's leaping about didn't
have something to do with his change in clothes; it seems to me that it
would be hard to do all of that athletic maneuvering in a tailored suit with
dress shoes, or with frilly ruffles and dress shoes, etc. Maybe it was
switching to those comfy Doc Martens....
