Re: The long and short Magic Bus

Jeff, re:

For some reason, this reminds me of the story when my friend, Bobby The Clown
recorded about 9 different versions of "Baba O'Riley" on one tape...
...getting back to MAGIC BUS... there are a plethora of versions:

1) The single version: short & mono
2) The "best of" version: long and mono
3) The MCA, "we can't find the master version"
4) The box set version: short & stereo
5) The "Magic Bus" album version (my personal favorite): short & stereo

Starting backwards: #5. Thanks to the same Bobby The Clown, who I thank for
pointing out to me that THIS is the BEST studio version of the same. Best
separation, best sound. Apparently Decca did something right. #4. In
attempting to recreate #5, the "box set" producers did a decent job, but not
quite. It seems that the song was recorded here in the States and where it
went thereafter wasn't in stereo. #3. MCA couldn't find the master that they
used for #5, but tried desperately to recreate it, only the results stank.
Not only that, but they stuck this version in on most (if not all) CD
reissues of vinyl albums that previously used versions #1 or #2. #2,
originally released on "Meaty Beaty..." It may currently be in print on the
"Who Collection Volume 1" CD, but don't quote me on that since I'm not home
to check... and #1. The original single. Should also be on various vinyl
"hits" albums...

So... there you have it: "Too much, the magic bus..." Not even getting into
the assorted "live" versions...
