LA Sports car meet (kinda long w/ pics)

I went an a little run this past weekend with the LA Sports Car Club.
The run was 175 miles complete, including the 125 mile canyon run up in
Angeles Crest/Wrightwood.
It was approx. 140-150 cars there for this annual event. There was
everything from exotic Porsches, Viper GTS R's, twin turbo 300Z, Supras,
Saleens, and cars of such. There was one viper out there on NOS running 689
hp to the rear wheels and 800+ ft lbs of torque. I am sure I had one of the
top 5 cheapest cars out there. That Saturday made me a Viper Fan. I
previously hated those cars, but now I have nothing but respect for them.
There had to be over 10 vipers out for that run. The day was pretty
successful except for 2 major crashes in the same place.
Check out the following URLs for pics of the event and crash.. An beautiful
M3 and stock Honda accord fell victim. There was only one other dub out
there besides myself, and he came with me..8(

There was some mad high speed stuff on the run, and a 3 mile straight away
that made me realize a couple things and brought down my spirits..
At the beginning I started off in the back of the pack, 2nd to last. About
60 miles into the run I made my way up the 2nd pack where they had about 5
vipers, 2 Porsches, 1 typhoon, 1 Skyline, 1 300Z twin turbo by Stillen and
about 4 to 5 turbo supras, and of coarse me. What happened next was a HUGE
wake up call for me. We came to a stop sign, then directly after the stop
sign was a short hill, from the top of the hill you can see about 3 miles
straight in front of you.. all straight road, 1 lane in each direction. AKA
Top speed run. When I was at the crest of the hill looking at the straight,
I saw all the Porsches and vipers pull out to the left and open it wide up.
By this time I am going about 80+ mph full throttle. Those cars walked away
from everyone else soo bad, it made it look like we were going backwards. I
did not see them again until another stop sign came up. I was able to hit a
little over 150 on the straight, passing up the typhoon and 300Z. There was
not enough room to catch up to the supras, but if the road was longer, they
would have been got! Speaking to one of the viper guys later, he told me he
got to 180 before slowing down because his spoiler looked like it was
shaking (possibly coming loose). That straight made me realize, no matter
what kind of turbo kit, NOS, Super charger, 3.2L you have.. a Jetta/GTI will
NEVER be a real sports car. I was under the notion that I had built a
*sport scar*.... but that day woke me up..8) All the little Supras, 300Z,
Saleens, RX7's, skylines, and every other car out there were toys compared
to the Porsches and vipers. You have to respect those *real sports cars*.
I sure do.
You can check out this web site to see a list of cars that signed up to go
which did not include the ones that just came out.

All in all it was a great day besides the accident and wake up call...
