Need tires to pass inspection on 2000 Jetta VR6

Hey all,

You're all probably sick of the tires discussions....

My 2000 Jetta VR6 has the 16" rims...   ALL STOCK.

Just looking for a good tire that kicks ass in the rain and will make the
car feel more agressive than the ones that come stock.

I'm also wondering if I can get away with going any wider or lower profile
than a 205/whatever(i think 55)/16 with the stock wheels...

I heard the 16" wheels on the jetta don't like the lower pro tires because
of the suspension or something...   sometimes under very hard braking if I
hit like a bump I feel like my front shocks are going to fly through the
hood....

Also in general, I'm looking to do anything to make the car feel more
agressive for not too much price (don't want to totally redo the suspension).
I want to remain more or less ALL STOCK...  thoughts?   general recommendations?
