TOMORROW a new unit will be officially opened on Tyneside for teenage
cancer patients. Health Reporter Helen Rae finds out more.
EVERY day six families are told their teenager has cancer.
That figure is rising. Many of the forms of cancer diagnosed are rare,
including bone cancer, leukaemia and osteosarcoma.
But all too often teenagers treated for the illness find it difficult to
settle within a hospital environment – too old for a children’s ward yet too
young to be treated alongside adult patients.
As a result, a new ground-breaking teenage cancer unit has been set up on
Tyneside to help youngsters with the disease and it will be officially
opened on Wednesday. It is estimated more than 100 young people will use the
centre each year.

Rock legend Roger Daltrey and X Factor winner Joe McElderry will visit the
centre at Newcastle’s Great North Children’s Hospital, where they will be
introduced to patients and staff before cutting the ribbon to mark its
official opening.
Simon Davies, chief executive of the Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “It has
been four years in the making and it’s a fantastic facility. It is going to
tick all the right boxes for young people diagnosed with cancer.”
The long-awaited £1.7m 10-bed unit provides care for 13 to 18-year-olds
with cancer from across the North East and Cumbria.
It has replaced the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria
 Infirmary.
Unlike ‘ordinary’ hospital wards, it has been designed by, and
specifically for, teenagers to be like a ‘home from home’.
It includes a recreational room – complete with pool table, plasma
television and juke box – a kitchen and dining area, a study, a parents’ room, a
complementary therapy room and a chill-out zone, as well as access to
internet facilities and rooms where parents can stay with their ill child.
