Stars to open first teen cancer unit
A HOST of celebrities will be in Cardiff today to mark the official opening of a special treatment centre for young cancer victims.
Sarah, the Duchess of York, together with pop stars Roger Daltrey, of The Who, and Kelly Jones, of the Stereophonics, and actor Sir Ben Kingsley are at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales for the opening of the £3.3m specialist cancer unit for teenagers.
They are all patrons of the Teenage Cancer Trust which has built the unit, the first specialist teenage cancer facility of its kind in Wales.
The state-of-the-art unit, which opened to patients in May, cares for young people with cancer from across South Wales and is the a result of fundraising since the appeal was launched 2004. Before the unit was opened teenagers with cancer were either treated on children’s or adults wards which were deemed unsuitable for their care.
Simon Davies, chief executive, Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “This unit will make a huge difference to young people diagnosed with cancer in Wales.”
